Winchester House

I have to admit, I don’t actually have the floorplans for this building, nevertheless, in the spirit of Halloween, today’s Friday Floorplan will feature the Winchester House.

William Winchester was the treasurer of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. One of the guns from that company, the Henry Rifle, became the first repeating rifle and is sometimes credited with the success of the North. That being said, many lives were taken with that gun. Sarah Winchester moved to San Jose after the death of her husband, William.

In San Jose

Sarah went to see a medium shortly after her husbands death. The medium told her that her husband was in the room with them , “He says for me to tell you that there is a curse on your family, which took the life of he and your child. It will soon take you too. It is a curse that has resulted from the terrible weapon created by the Winchester family. Thousands of persons have died because of it and their spirits are now seeking vengeance.” Sarah was then instructed to sell everything and move far away. She was also instructed that she must build a home for the many spirits who died from that gun, and if she ever stopped building she would die.

So Sarah found a home on 162 acres in San Jose and had people working on the house 24/7 for years. There are many oddities within this maze of a building. staircases that start going down only to turn back up, stairs that go up seven flights with 42 steps each being only 2″ tall, secret passageways to help confuse the ghosts who may be following her.

The result, an amazing, mysterious mansion!!! It’s fun to tour if you’re in the area… If you want to read more of the stories of the mysterious Winchester mansion, I would recommend going to winchestermysteryhouse.comĀ – its quite a tale!
